GA4 for Small Business: What to Track and Which Reports Matter

Updated October 13, 2026
google analytics 4 whats new

GA4 for small business comes down to three things: track the actions that bring in revenue, see which traffic sources drive them, and check which landing pages turn visitors into leads. Universal Analytics no longer processes data, so GA4 is now the only version of Google Analytics. Set it up around your leads and sales, not around every report it offers.

Key Takeaways

  • Mark your lead actions, such as form submissions, calls and email clicks, as key events. Without them, GA4 cannot show what works.
  • A few reports cover most small business needs: traffic acquisition, landing pages and key events.
  • Fix common setup mistakes early, such as duplicate tags, internal traffic and untagged campaigns.
  • Link Search Console to see the Google searches that bring people to your pages.
  • GA4 does not fill in history. Anything you do not track today is lost.

Why Should a Small Business Use GA4?

GA4 replaced Universal Analytics, and the standard version is free. It records every interaction as an event: a page view, a scroll, a click or a form submission. That model fits how small businesses actually measure success. You care less about page counts and more about who called, booked or bought.

Used well, GA4 answers a short list of practical questions. Where do your customers come from? Which pages persuade them? Which campaigns lead to enquiries? It also connects to Google Ads and Search Console, so you can see paid and organic search in one place.

The catch is that GA4 only measures what you tell it to. A default install counts visits, but it will not know which actions matter to your business.

What Should a Small Business Track in GA4?

Start with the actions that turn a visitor into a customer. Then add the context that explains where those customers came from.

Key Events: Form Submissions, Calls and Email Clicks

GA4 calls your most important actions key events. Google Ads still uses the word conversions, and you can import GA4 key events into Google Ads as conversions. For most service businesses, the key events are:

  • Form submissions: track a thank-you page or a confirmation event. GA4’s automatic form tracking can miss or miscount submissions, so test it before relying on it.
  • Phone calls: track taps on click-to-call links. This counts the tap, not a completed call, so treat it as a strong signal rather than an exact count.
  • Email clicks: track clicks on email address links on your contact page, header and footer.
  • Bookings and quote requests: track the confirmation step of any booking tool or quote form.
  • Online sales: stores should track purchases, add-to-cart and checkout steps with ecommerce events.

Most of these need a little setup, usually through Google Tag Manager or a plugin. Once an event is collecting data, mark it as a key event in GA4’s admin settings.

Where Do Your Visitors Come From and Land?

Traffic Sources

GA4 sorts visits into channels such as Organic Search, Paid Search, Direct, Referral, Organic Social and Email. Add UTM parameters to links in your newsletters, social posts and QR codes. Otherwise much of that traffic lands in Direct, and you cannot tell which effort worked.

Landing Pages

A landing page is the first page someone sees on your site. Reviewing key events by landing page shows which pages bring in enquiries and which attract visits that go nowhere. That tells you where to improve copy, offers and calls to action.

Which GA4 Reports Matter Most?

GA4 has dozens of reports. A small business can get most of its answers from a handful.

Report Question it answers Where to find it
Traffic acquisition Which channels bring visits and key events? Reports, Acquisition section
Landing page Which entry pages engage visitors and produce leads? Reports, Engagement section
Events and key events How often do people submit forms, call or buy? Reports, Engagement section
Realtime Is my tracking firing right now? Reports, Realtime
Funnel exploration Where do people drop out of checkout or a long form? Explore

GA4 also reports engagement rate, the share of sessions where someone stayed, viewed more than one page or completed a key event. It is a more useful health check than raw visit counts. If a page gets traffic but low engagement and no key events, start there. Our guide to lead generation website design covers what to change on those pages.

What Are the Most Common GA4 Setup Mistakes?

Most GA4 problems on small business sites come from the setup. Check for these:

  • No key events marked. GA4 collects data but cannot show which channels produce leads.
  • The tag installed twice. A theme setting, a plugin and Tag Manager can each add GA4, which doubles page views.
  • Internal traffic counted. Define your office IP addresses as internal traffic and turn on the data filter, so staff visits do not skew results.
  • Short data retention. GA4 keeps detailed exploration data for a limited time by default. Raise it to the longest option in the admin settings.
  • Payment or booking tools showing as referrals. Add those domains to the unwanted referrals list so sales keep their real source.
  • Untagged campaigns. Emails and social posts without UTM parameters end up hidden in Direct traffic.
  • Never testing. Submit your own form and tap your own phone link, then confirm both show up in Realtime or DebugView.

GA4 tells you a form was submitted. It does not tell you whether that lead became a sale. A CRM closes that gap. D2 Build, a Toronto contractor, got a $367,000 project from a Google Ads lead after MGG moved its ads to an account it owns and connected HubSpot.

How Do You Connect GA4 to Search Console?

Search Console shows how your site appears in Google Search: the queries, impressions, clicks and average position. GA4 shows what those visitors did once they arrived. Linking the two puts both views side by side.

  1. Confirm you are a verified owner of the site in Search Console and have edit access in GA4.
  2. In GA4’s admin settings, open the product links section and choose Search Console links.
  3. Pick your Search Console property, then choose the web data stream for your site.
  4. Review and submit the link.
  5. Open the reports library and publish the Search Console collection so the reports appear in your menu.

The Search Console data in GA4 covers Google organic search only, and query data is grouped. You can see which queries lead to a landing page, but not what an individual visitor searched. Clean analytics is the base of any website SEO plan, because you cannot improve rankings or leads you cannot measure.

GA4 for Small Business: FAQ

Is GA4 free for small businesses?

Yes. The standard version of GA4 is free. Google sells a paid version, Analytics 360, aimed at large organizations. Most small businesses never need it.

Can I still see my old Universal Analytics data?

No. Universal Analytics has been shut down, and its reports are no longer available in Google Analytics. If you exported data before the shutdown, keep that export as your historical record.

Do I need Google Tag Manager to use GA4?

No, but it helps. Tag Manager makes it easier to track phone taps, email clicks and form confirmations without editing site code each time.

How soon can I trust my GA4 data?

Realtime shows whether tracking works within minutes. For decisions about channels and pages, wait for a few weeks of data after your key events are set up and tested.
